3 Days Tigray Churches Trekking
Day 1: Drive from Mekele about 100km towards the massive Gheralta mountains
After breakfast, drive to the base of the Gheralta Mountains to begin your trekking adventure. Continue trekking for about 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the ancient church on the cliff called Youhans Maqudi. After visiting, trek for another 3–4 hours to reach the beautifully decorated 7th-century church Abune Abraham. Descend to the base camp (around 2 hours).
Accommodation: Camping in the village under the big tree.
Day 2: Trekking to Mariam Papsite
After breakfast prepared by our professional cook, continue trekking through the scenic Gheralta landscape, passing wildlife, local villages, and traditional Tigray houses. Reach and visit Mariam Papsite church, then trek to the base camp (about 4 hours).
Accommodation: Camping in the village of Korkor.
Day 3: Trekking to Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor
After an early breakfast, start trekking to the highest point of the Gheralta Mountains (2700m above sea level) for panoramic views in all directions. After lunch atop the mountain, visit the churches of Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. Conclude with a one-hour walk to Hawzen, then drive back to Mekelle.
5 Days Axum and Tigray Churches
Day 1: Aksum City Tour
Explore the main Stelae Park — home to the famous granite obelisks, relics of Axum’s glorious past and UNESCO World Heritage status. Visit the Great Stelae, Queen of Sheba’s swimming pool, Ezana’s inscription, tombs of King Kaleb and King Gebremeskel, Queen of Sheba’s palace, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion (believed to house the Ark of the Covenant).
Overnight: Aksum Sabean Hotel.
Day 2: Aksum – Gheralta
After breakfast, drive via the dramatic mountains of Adwa to visit the ancient Temple of Yeha (8th–7th century BC), believed to be the capital of pre-Axumite civilization. Visit the local museum, then drive to Debre Damo Monastery (men only). Continue to Adigrat for lunch, then drive to Hawzien.
Overnight: Gheralta Lodge.
Day 3: Visit Gheralta Churches
Drive 12 km west of Hawzien to visit Abune Yemata Guh, built by one of the Nine Saints in the 6th century AD. This cliff church offers a true adventure climb, panoramic views, and magnificent frescoes.

Day 4: Gheralta Churches
After breakfast, hike to visit Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, about an hour’s walk with exceptional scenery and views over the Gheralta range.
Overnight: Wukro Lodge.
Day 5: Wukro – Mekelle
In the morning, visit Abune Abraham Church (about an hour’s walk from the main road), famous for its views and ancient paintings. On the way back, stop at the twin church Abreha we Atsbeha, final resting place of Kings Ezana and Saizana. Continue to Mekelle, stop for lunch in Wukro, and visit Yohannes IV Museum in the afternoon.
